Richard1 Thayer was baptized Apr.5,1601 at St. Mary's Church,
Thornbury, Gloucestershire, England, perhaps a son of Richard
Thayer, but only the names of his god parents are given on the
register, - Richard Dimery, Nicholas Tayer, and Elizabeth Griffing.
He married 1st Apr.5,1624 at Thornbury Dorothy Mortimore, who was
buried there Jan.17,1640/1, a daughter of William Mortimore whose
second wife Margaret Groome survived him.
Immediately after the death of his wife Richard Thayer with his
eight small children embarked for America and came to Braintree
where Thomas Thayer, undoubtedly his brother was established. Here
he bought 4 acres of land on present Elm St. Braintree, about 1/3
mile easterly of Thomas Thayer's homestead, and his son Richard
settled here permanently.
About July 1646 Richard Thayer Sr. married at Boston Jane, widow of
John Parker of Boston, who came from Marlboro, England. In Oct.1656
Jane "the now wife of Richard Tare, late of Boston, heretofore the
widow of John Parker late of Boston, deceased, with Thomas Parker
her son, and children John and Noah for their education ... sell to
Stephen Greenleaf of Newbury, blacksmith, her house and land at
Boston and 42 acres at Muddy River (Brookline)... with the consent
of her children for their and her own transportation into England,
dated Oct.14,1656 (S.D. 3-148). Mrs. Jane (Kember) Parker Thayer
probably died in England before 1660. John Parker m. Jane Kember
Sep.29,1628, Marlboro, England. (See American Genealogist, Vol.18,
p.114).
Richard1 Thayer married 3rd, probably in England, before 1660,
Katherine -
Thayer (cont.) 4618
who survived him and died between Feb.1, and Apr.5,1687 in the town
and parish of St. Michael's, Barbados. Richard1 Thayer died at the
same place in Barbados in Oct.1664, leaving a will dated Oct.6,
proved Oct.12,1664, giving his estate to his wife Katherine for
life, then to be divided among his surviving children (not named).
The widow Katherine Thayer left a will dated Feb.1, proved
Apr.5,1687 only disposes of a negro slave named Dorcio. Both wills
are disappointing genealogically, but Suffolk Court records (#
424,455,828, paper 29) show that Richard Thayer was in Barbados as
early as Mar.12,1660 as were his sons Richard and Nathaniel, and he
also mentions his daughter Dorothy and his wife Katherine and
Samuel (Samuel Davis, his son in law). He was a merchant there
apparently engaged in shipping rum, cotton, and sugar to New
England as mentioned in his account (published in "Ancestors and
Descendants of Peter Parker and Sarah Ruggles of Roxbury by J.W.
Lingee, pp.529-57).
(continued)_ Thayer (cont.) 4618
There was also a John Thayer at Barbados who left a will dated
Aug.29,1661, proved Jun.22,1665. He mentions various people, but
the only relative mentioned is his sister Elinor Lemon. There are
several baptisms of John and Elinor Thayer's at Thornbury, England,
the home of Richard1 Thayer and Thomas1 Thayer.
Richard1 Thayer was made a freeman of Mass. Bay Colony 1641, so was
evidently a church member here.

4619
I do not believe Hester Thayer bapt. Nov.24,1636 married in 1650 at
age 13 Edward Hall. Edward Hall and wife Esther or Hester had a
son, born Jan.23,1650(1) when Hester Thayer was just over 14 years
old.
Hester Thayer in 1695 was wife of Joseph Gray of Taunton whom she
married after 1676 when his first wife died. Edward Hall died in
1670 at Rehoboth._ Thayer 4620

died - "Richard Thayer Sr. died Aug.27,1695 aged 71 years," says
his gravestone, Hancock Cem., Quincy.
married Dec.24,1651 at Braintree, Dorothy Pray, born about 1634,
died Dec.11,1705, dau. of Quinton Pray, an iron worker, who resided
near the Thayer homestead on Elm. St., Braintree.
No settlement of his estate is recorded, but he was an extensive
land speculator and from his claims and rebuttals we know much
about him. He was one of the eight children who came over with his
father early in 1641; in 1648 he purchased his father's homestead
in Braintree and added to it in 1661, 1663, 1667 and in 1668
mortgaged his lands and became involved in a law suit because his
title was not clear to some of them and was in turn forced to sue
for some of the Iron Works land that had been sold to him without
clear title. He became involved in other land deals, having leased
in 1657 a large tract of land at present Canton from Capt. Roger
Clapp, and in 1692 sued Clapp's heirs but lost the case.
About 1680 he returned to England and made claims for land which so
alarmed the Braintree inhabitants that they sent a petition to the
throne in England in rebuttal (Mass. Archives 3-34 & 1-87). In 1685
he again laid claim to large tracts of the Iron Works land. He only
succeeded however in obtaining the remaining estate of Increase
Robinson of Taunton, the administrator of the estate of John Payne
of Boston who had sold him by defective title a small piece of land
belonging to the creditors of the Iron Works Co. in Braintree. He
also became in litigation from -
Thayer 4621
a contract for building a vessel at Braintree in 1688 (Suffolk
Court Rec. #1342 & #947).
In 1658 he was fined by the General Court for selling liquor
contrary to law (Mass. Colony Rec. Vol.4, p.1?). During the
litigation and afterwards he occupied the lands he had mortgaged to
Simon Lynde, as a tenant and in the settlement of Lynde's estate in
1689 his son Benjamin Lynde received lands and estate at Braintree
in the occupation of Richard Thayer. Richard Thayer or his heirs
eventually recovered some or all of these lands, probably by
repayment of the mortgage. His well preserved gravestone would
indicate he had some estate at his decease, though none is of
record.
(See Pattee's History of Quincy pp. 40-54 for details of some of
the lawsuits, also Suffolk Court Rec. #1885,2053,2508, also Suffolk
Deeds 5-446, 7-236, 11-309, 16-42, Bristol Deeds 1-224, 6-307,

He also was in Barbados in 1660 with his father, and probably
stayed there some time as no children are of record between 1658
and 1670.

Jan.28,1732 aged 73 years 8 days, says her gravestone, Elm St.
Cem., dau. of James & Mary (Farr) Mycall.
Rebecca the widow, and Benjamin the son were administrators of his
estate Jan.3,1705(6) and her account filed Apr.4,1713 as the
surviving administrator includes "a debt paid to Benjamin Lynde œ38
cash paid to Samuel Lynde œ5/6/6-", which may represent the
clearing of the mortgage that had involved his father in such
protracted litigation. The estate was settled upon John Thayer the
second surviving son, as Richard the oldest surviving son declined
it, and he paid off the other heirs, to widow Margaret Thayer in
behalf of her children, Margaret, Benjamin, & Zebulon, a double
portion, Richard Thayer, Rebecca Bolter, Mary, Deborah, Anna and
Obadiah Thayer, or their guardians, his mother to have her dower.
The account also mentions money paid for the funeral of the
deceased and his two sons (Gideon and James).
He was elected fenceviewer 1698, tithingman 1701, constable 1703.
He was a soldier in 1675 in the Indian War (Register Vol.8)

other things "two houses about a mile and a half, one from the

it will be a damage to divide either of them they were settled on
two sons Zachariah and Hezekiah. Son Richard Thayer "removeth to my

complain the widow Hannah has not rendered a full inventory or

his brother Nathaniel Oct.13,1729 and the real estate was finally

married Jul.19,1717 at Dorchester, Rachel Spear, born Apr.10,1686,
died - before 1755, dau. of Ebenezer & Rachel (Deering) Spear of
Braintree.
They resided on land given by his father at the present N.W. corner
of North & Oak Sts., Randolph until 1755 when he sold his house and
30 acres to Nathaniel Littlefield of Stoughton, and no further
record is found of him except that a deposition of William & Thomas
Curtis in 1841 states that they know Sampson Dunbar, a mulatto when
he lived with Cornelius Thayer near the pond, date not stated, but
must have been sometime after 1766 as Sampson Dunbar was living
with Gen. Ebenezer Thayer about 1766, according to the testimony,
and it could not have been earlier that the Curtises recalled him
at Cornelius Thayer's if the depositions are correct, since William
Curtis was born in 1753. Cornelius Thayer, however, sold land to
Sampson Dunbar Jan.13,1755, same month he sold his homestead to
Nathaniel Littlefield (Norfolk Deeds 131-113 & S.D. ).
No children, apparently
Cornelius Thayer Jr. was elected constable 1738. He was a

of John & Mary (? Yardley) Hollis. She married 2nd May 29,1751
(Christ Ch.Rec) William French.
Gideon4 Thayer was son of Cornelius3 and not of Nathaniel3 as given
in the Thayer Memorial and later books. He resided on Middle St.
south of Union St. east side, on land that was his father in law's,
except between 1732-4 when he went to the So. Precinct, on land of
his father's, the 17th lot in 6th division, north of Oak St., near
No. Main St., Randolph.
He joined the church at So. Precinct in 1732 as did his wife
Hannah. His estate was divided in 1753 but the widow's dower was
not divided until Nov.4,1776 and she presumably died shortly before
that date.

Gideon, eldest son had a double portion and shares were given to

Abigail, Mercy White and Ezra Penniman & Eunice gave receipts for

They resided in the South Precinct (Randolph) on land given by his

On Jul.15,1746 James Penniman was made administrator of David

reads Cornelius Thayer, by error), and James Penniman was appointed
same day as guardian to David aged 19, Ruth about 18, Abigail about

of Braintree, trader, and Israel Hersey of Boston, carter. In
Sep.1770 she sold land to Moses Baker and this is the last record

His children are not all on record and there may have been a few
more than given here as no division of the estate is recorded. The

"being all the estate shown to us" when taken Nov.2,1790 by Moses
French the administrator de-bonis-non.
Nathaniel Wales gentleman was made administrator Sep.17,1782, and
most of the land went into the Wales family before Eleazer Thayer's
death as a deposition taken Jan.26,1790 (S.D. 167-104) states that
Eleazer Thayer and wife had sold it to Nathaniel Wales Nov.14,1770
but they and the two witnesses Zebah Thayer and Ahaz French being

No settlement of his estate is on record but from deeds it is
learned that his heirs had a small house lot on present So. Main
St., Randolph, near the Town Hall, opposite the old High School
(S.D. 111-218 and 127-165).
He was dead before the first deed Oct.9,1767, but he (or possibly
his son Zebulon) witnessed a deed in Mar.1767.
His widow Sarah and sons Asa & Elias sold the above house lot

between Oak St. and Great Pond a part of which he sold Jun.8,1737
