  Note	Ma talked about how difficult it was for a widow with f ive children to survive. She told me they all had to work as soon as they could. She told me about taking a job as a housecleaner in said that she knotted sheets and climbed out a window and ran away. She was an exceptionally beautiful young woman, tall, willowy with a waist so tiny you could put your two hands all the way around. She had dark brown eyes and dark brown hair. She told me sister Maggie was once a Miss Montana - K. Bartelmes When Ma was married to Pappy, he weighed 115 lbs. and was 23. Ma was 20 and weighed 90 lbs. Note - Ma was 5'9' tall! Pappy was 5'6' tall. They travelled a lot to Idaho, Oregon, Vancouver, Canada, Caifornia, Utah, Montana back to Spokane where Joy was born. They returned to Seattle when Joy was 4 months old.
