- He enlisted as a private in Company H, 82nd Regiment, Indiana Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War. During the battle of Buzzards Roost Gap, (Mill Creek Gap near Dalton, Georgia) 5/8-9/1864, a cannon was prematurely fired and his face was powder burned, resulting in the eventual loss of his right eye. Mustered in 8/9/1862 at Nashville, Indiana, appointed Corporal 8/30/1864, and mustered out 5/18/1865 due to disability. Applied for a pension on 1/15/1876.
