Note	Last name is Erwin as per Jim Arwine (jra334@@juno.com). Family history states that about the middle of the eighteenth century, John and his brother Daniel, left Germany for England. Daniel stayed there, but John emigrated on to America where he settled in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, Augusta County. Was a private in Captain Simpson's Company, Colonel Morgan's Rifle Regiment, Continental Troops, during the Revolutionary War. NOTE* Morgan's riflemen were a select group of hand-picked sharpshooters, taken from the army at large and had to be taller than average and expert marksmen. They were recruited by Daniel Morgan, a Pennsylvania frontiersman and first cousin of Daniel Boone. In June, 1777, Washington had authorized Morgan to raise a special corps of 500 light infantrymen who were to be chosen for their marksmanship. Given the official name Rangers, they came to be known as Morgan's Riflemen. NOTE* The Riflemen fought at the Battle Of Freeman's Farm, 9/19/1777, near Saratoga, New York. This battle is called the turning point of the war, and because of the defeat the British suffered there, General Burgoyne was shortly forced to surrender on 10/17/1777.
