- BIO: Cornelius Dillingham, born Hanover, Mass. about 1776; died probably at Freeport, Maine after 1850; married first 15 December 1796, Desire Rose, born at Hanover, Mass.; married second Rhoda (____), born Maine, about 1800. Cornelius, according to family tradition, was the youngest son of Edward and Marcy (Doty) Dillingham. In 1796 he married Desire Rose of Freeport, and a native of Hanover, Mass. On 26 September 1798, Cornelius was commissioned quarter master of a battalion of artillery in the 2nd Brigade 6th Division, Mass. militia. Later, 6 August 1804, he was captain. Cornelius bought land in Freeport, Maine in 1799 from his brother, Samuel. His occupation was 'trader' and 'cabinet maker.' He was apparently the only member of his family who was not a blacksmith. He was selectman of Freeport for eight years between 1806-1824. He was collector and constable in 1815, and justice of the peace as late as 1832. Although Freeport records contain only the name of Desire (Rose) who was contemporary in age, as the wife of Cornelius, the 1850 census lists Rhoda Dillingham, age 50, the only female in his household. Her name follows Cornelius' - the usual space used by enumerators for the wife. Cornelius' date of death has not been established. Children of Cornelius and Desire (Rose) Dillingham, all born in Freeport, Maine: i Mary Rogers, born 10 May 1799; married Capt. George Bacon of Freeport, as second wife. He married first, her cousin Marcy Dillingham, daughter of Samuel. ii Charles, born 6 October 1801; no further record found to date. iii Edward Rose, born 22 May 1803; died 2 October 1828; buried in Freeport, Maine. iv Eliza, born 10 April 1805; no further record found to date. v George, born 3 July 1811; died 12 September 1812. vi Martha Coffin, born 13 December 1813; died at Boston, Mass. 6 March 1880; unmarried. From the Dillingham Family Exchange Bulletin Vol IV 1984.
