- BIO: William Dillingham, born probably at Hanover, Mass. about 1770; died 1832; married first 17 April 1792, Hannah Griffen of Freeport, Maine; married second Abigail (____). Although there is no documentation to prove William was a son of Edward and Marcy (Doty) Dillingham, Winthrop Alexander in his 'Dillingham Family of New England,' stated, '...circumstantial evidence seems to place him in this family.' William was a blacksmith and a farmer. He was first of record in Freeport, Cumberland County, Maine, when he married 17 April 1792, Hannah Griffen of Freeport. He bought land in Brunswick, Maine in 1794, but had returned to Freeport by 1796, when his first child was born. The births of all his children were recorded in Freeport. William appears to have married twice. The name of his second wife Abigail, appeared in a deed dated 1828 in Freeport, Cumberland County. Freeport records name Hannah as the mother of all of his children, but a granddaughter told Mr. Alexander that her father, William Jr., had a half-brother and half-sister. Census records indicate that Hannah probably died shortly after the taking of the 1820 census when the senior male and female in William's household were enumerated in the age bracket 45 and over. In the 1830 census, the senior male (William) was in the 60-70 age group, and the senior female was in the 30-40 age group. Also in the family were a male age 10-15, and a female under 5 years. If these were William's children by Abigail, the births were not included in Freeport records. This might be explains by William's sale of land in Freeport in 1828 to his son Sewell, and that same year, purchase and later sale of land in Poland, Maine. William Dillingham died in 1832. Abigail Dillingham was not enumerated in the 1840 census, but perhaps had remarried. Children of William and Hannah (Griffen) Dillingham, all born in Freeport, Maine: i William (Jr.), born 2 July 1796; died at Westbrook, Maine, 17 March 1860; married first 9 August 1825, Sarah Hall; married second Sarah B. Hutchinson. ii Philip, born 21 June 1798; no further record found to date. iii Bathsheba, born 25 April 1800. (Freeport record says, Bathsheba Rollins.) iv Diana, born 13 August 1802; married Stephen Sayer of Durham, Maine. v Sewell, born 12 March 1805; died probably by 1850; married Hannah Fogg. vi John Griffen, born 21 November 1808; died Freeport, Maine, 4 February 1869; married 20 October 1840, Margaret Dennison. Children of William Dillingham and his second wife, Abigail: vii son, born about 1815-1820. viii daughter, born about 1825-1830. From the Dillingham Family Exchange Bulletin Vol IV 1984.
