- Roy Jessie Burgess, youngest child of Marcus and Emiline (Sanborn) Burgess, was born 8 December 1897 near Palco, Kansas. His early youth was spent in the Palco area. In 1915 at the age of 17, he accompanied his mother to a new homestead northeast of Arriba, Colorado. Roy Burgess married Geneva Lemore Mullenex 15 October 1925 at Hugo, Colorado. She was born 10 November 1901 at Lucerne, Missouri. Roy and Neva Burgess celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary in 1975. Moving from Colorado to Washington in 1934 because of the 'Dust Bowl' conditions in the Plains States, the Roy Burgess family lived lived in the Yakima Valley from 1935 to 1942 when they moved to Seattle. He worked in the fruit orchards during the summer and fall months and at the sugar factory at Toppenish during the winter. Even though listed on census as a farmer during his early years, Roy Burgess was a multi-talented individual. He was a blacksmith, often shaping his own tools. He practiced home denistry, according to his daughter, Nita Hauer...'he remade a pair of pliers for pulling teeth, which he used on himself and his daughter, Nita, when her baby teeth were slow in loosening.' He was a builder, contriving 'his own horse-powered piece of machinery for mixing adobe bricks, with which he built several houses and farm structures....an improvement over the sod houses that were built and lived in before this time.' Roy also barbered, a necessity because of the long distance to the nearest town. With the advent of the automobile, he became a mechanic. Roy Burgess moved his family to Seattle in 1942 where they have resided the remaider of their years. Roy worked for the Army Engineers in Seattle until his retirement in 1963. His retirement found him busy, if not more so, than before retirement. He continued using his building skills, adding on, remodelling and repairing his family and neighbor's homes. But he also filled his time with artistic pursuits, creating 'unusual and outstanding designs with wood and gemstones, using the colors and textures of nature. Roy Burgess died in Seattle, 23 Aug 1981, after a month of hospitalization. Neva Burgess remained in their Seattle home until her death 21 March 1991. She had several bouts with infimities before her end, even spending time in a nursing home because of he frailties. CHILDREN: i. Nita May Burgess, b. 22 August 1926, in Washington County, CO ii.
