- MARY ADELAIDE SANBORN, youngest child of Ernest and Euphemia (Coffey) Sanborn, was born 3 March 1911 in Port Townsend, Washington. To her many friends she was known as Addie. She died 1 July 1991 in Pullman, Washington of cancer of the stomach. A memorial service was held for her at Simpson United Methodist Church, where she had been a member since moving to Pullman in 1956. Her body was cremated and the ashes spread, overlooking the waterfalls entering Quilcene River at Falls View State Park near Quilcene, WA. on the Olympic Peninsula. Adelaide Sanborn married Roy Woodrow Burgess, 22 March 1934 in Seattle, Washington. They were divorced 22 October 1951 in Ellensburg, Washington. Adelaide Sanborn was raised in the Olympic Peninsula, being actively engaged in 4-H club work and other organizations since childhood. She graduated from high school valedictorian of her class. She attended a year of college before economic conditions of the depression years of the 1930's prevented her return. After her marriage, she and her husband lived in the Yakima Valley for several years, except during the early years of World War II, when they resided in Seattle, Washington, where Roy worked in the shipyards. In 1942, they moved to South Cle Elum, Washington, and operated a dairy; moved to another dairy northeast of Ellensburg in 1944. In 1945, they moved to virgin land opening near Prosser, Washington, called the Rosa Project. Adelaide Burgess remained on this farm with her children until 1956, when the farm was sold so Adelaide could return to college. Between 1950 and 1956, she was employed in clerical work at the WSC Irrigation Experimental Station at Prosser. The fall of 1956, she returned to college in Pullman, Washington, completing her education which was interrupted earlier. She graduated with honors from Washington State University, (first graduating class after the University was changed from Washington State College) 29 May 1960, with a B.S. in Psychology and Education. The following autumn she began a teaching profession in the elementary schools of Pullman, which continued until 1976 when she reached the retirement age. She believed in providing as much hands-on experience as possible for her students, to examine under the microscope. She even received a live tarantula from the Nevada desert when her daughters, Helen and Kathryn, lived in Las Vegas. During her teaching years, Adelaide Burgess continued to pursue her yen for learning, eventually earning her Master's Degree in Education in 1964. After her retirement, Adelaide Burgess moved from public school teaching to private lessons, teaching 'English as a second language' to the many foreign students who resided in Pullman. She continued this endeavor until the fall before her death. Adelaide Burgess was a member of both Washington State and Whitman County Retired Teachers' Association, and served as the Whitman Chapter's Treasurer for 10 years. Adelaide was an active member of the educational honorary societies Pi Lamba Theta and Phi Kappa Phi, as well as, the scholastic honorary society, Phi Beta Kappa. In 1971, she attended a national convention for Pi Lambda Theta in Boston, Massachusetts, whiich provided her with an opportunity to travel around that area before returning to Pullman. Adelaide was an avid traveller after her retirement, often planning the trips for her friends accompanying her. She visited Hawaii on two different occasions. Was in England three times, going first with a friend; another time for a John Wesley (founder of Methodism) tour of his haunts in England; and then for a short stay before taking in a two week tour of Europe wiith many of her Prosser and Pullman friends which included the 1990 Passion Play at Oberammergau, Bavaria. [The Passion Play was a medival mystery play representing the Passion of Jesus, presented every 10th year since 1634, in fullfillment of a vow made in thanksgiving for salvation from a plague.] She had originally planned to go in 1980, but was not able to make it due open heart surgery six months prior. She aslo travelled with her family, showing her daughter, Helen, all the wonderful sights around Washington D.C. in 1984; as well as travelling around the Civil War battle sites in Virginia and Gettysburg, Pennsylvania; taking in Williamsburg; visiting Monticello, Thomas Jefferson's home. In 1986, Adelaide returned for a second time to Alaska, going with her daughters, Helen and Kathryn, again showing them many of the wonders of this state, including Mananuska Glacier where she got stuck in the mud, having difficulty getting unstuck. Her first trip to Alaska was with her sister, Alice Winters, in the 1970's. Adelaide was always ready to take to the road whenever suggested, often taking trips with her daughter, Helen, around the state to visit family and relatives, or up into British Columbia, Canada, to visit relatives. She thought nothing of hopping into her car and travelling across the state to visit her family. She was an adventurous soul, especially if it was a learning experience as well, like her many Elderhostel classes she attended around the northwest. CHILDREN: i.
