  Note	To: Sandy Clunies [73477,3124] Subj: Davis Ancestry Sandy, I have a 9th great grandmother named Joanna Davis b.1624 who married a George Corliss b. 1617 on 26 October 1645 in Haverhill, MA. She was the daughter of Thomas Davis and Christine Coffin. Is there any chance that she could be related to your James Davis and Cicely Thayer? It would be neat to find that they were related for the Davis's are in my mother's ancestry and of course the Thayers on the other side.   Note	Well, yes and no. No, Thomas DAVIS was no *known* relative of James DAVIS. Hoyt does say thay 'may' be related in some way, but not known. But... you lucky duck .. George & Joanna (DAVIS) CORLISS .. are also MY ancestors! And, there is no proof of the last name of Thomas DAVIS' wife. Her first name was Christian. And there is speculation on COFFIN, but she fits into no known COFFIN family, and there is no proof on record of any surname. Hoyt, nor Torrey accepts any surname for her - and no one has given any documentation to primary records giving COFFIN as her name. So, if you *must* write it, use it ?COFFIN to alert the reader that it is NOT a proven name. (I'm also of COFFIN ancestry, so know that family inside and out, too.) Now James DAVIS *had* a brother named Thomas.... but he never came to New England. DAVIS is a very common English name, and there were many immigrants of that name - most of whom were unrelated to one another. Thomas DAVIS is not covered in the secondary sources anywhere nearly as often as James - but then, James left many sons and thousands of descendants. And Thomas had just one son, Joseph, who died probably unmarried at age 39 in 1671 in Haverhill- thus ending that DAVIS line. ---Sandy.
