    • He settled in Barnstable. He had seven children. His son Thomas born 9 Apr 1694, graduated at Harvard College and settled in the ministry at Weymouth, was the father of the honorable Robert Treat Paine, the distinguished lawyer and signer of the Declaration of Independene.

He served as a military clerk in the 1691 expedition against Canada, and his heirs received therefor in 1736 a grant of land in Maine.' WILL: `Mayflower Families-Stephen Hopkins' by John D Austin (1992) p51 -'Letters of administration were issued in the estate of Mr. James Paine of Barnstable to Mrs. Bethiah Paine and Mr. Thomas Paine 20 Jan. 1728/9. Thomas was named substitute administrator of the estate of Thomas Crocker, succeeding his father James on 21 Jan. 1728/9. Settlement of the estate of James Paine occurred 31 Oct. 1729 when Thomas Paine, Bethiah Paine, Mary Freeman and experience Hunt, his children entered into an agreement with widow Bethian Paine. Samuel Hunt, husband of Experience, also signed.'
